Matt's Journey Has Come to an End

I have a very heavy heart as I write this post.  My dear husband, the love of my life for the past 29 years, passed away last evening June 17, with all of our 8 children and myself circled around his bed.  I still can't quite believe he is gone.  It was so quick, something I am so grateful for, but still hard to accept.

Thank you all so much for your sweet messages of love and comfort. Matt's funeral will be Saturday June 29, 2013 at 10:00 am. It will be held at the Thatcher, AZ LDS Stake Center, 4050 W 2nd St, Thatcher, AZ. The viewing will be Friday night from 7 - 9 pm at the same building and then again Saturday morning from 9 - 9:45 am.

I wanted to post some pictures from the incredible video that Tom has made and Matt was able to see before he passed.  As you can see Matt loved to goof off and have fun.  That is how I will always remember him!

Dolci e tenere misericordie

Cari amici e parenti,

In compenso dorme molto.

1. Padre celeste, sei davvero in ciel?
«Lasciate i bimbi venire a me».
Padre in preghiera ora vengo a Te.

2. Sì, Egli è qui;
sì, Ti ascolta;
sei figlio Suo,
d’amor ti circonda.
Dio sente te;
ama i bambini,
poiché nostro è il regno,
il regno del ciel.

Sweet and Tender Mercies

Dear Friends and Family,
Our days continue to get more difficult and our boots are heavy as Matt continues to grow weaker.  He is still able to walk, but only to the bedroom, bathroom and living room.  He eats very little and doesn't like to talk as it expends too much energy.  He sleeps a lot as well.  He is very yellow and my children say his eyes are the color of a yellow highlighter pen.  The most difficult part of this journey is watching a healthy body slowly become only a shell of what it once was.

Even though things are hard I am always amazed at how God blesses us and lets us feel his presence and love. This week a dear friend that I met at the cancer center came to stay and help me.  She lost her son to colon cancer about a year ago and we have stayed in touch with each other.  She was amazing and was truly a gift from God.  She cooked, cleaned, played games with my children, listened and offered little gems of wonderful advice.  I told her when she left that I was feeling that same feeling of saddness and anxiousness that I felt each time my mom left after coming to help me after each of my children were born.  :)

These past few weeks we have had so many calls, messages, texts, etc. from people all over the world who wanted to let us know that they were thinking of us and praying for us.  Others who live close have brought in meals, treats, fruit, flowers, etc.  My sisters and my mom have been there for me every single time I have needed them.  They seem to know when I am struggling and they are always there to love me and let me cry.  How blessed I am to have been born into such a strong and loving family.

On Saturday my sisters daughter was baptized and at the baptism her children sang "A Child's Prayer".  The words are below.  The younger ones sang the first verse and then her 16 year old son song sang the second verse.  As he began to sing the second verse I had this wonderful, beautiful overwhelming feeling of love cover me completely.  I felt my Saviors love for me so strongly; it was a feeling a could not deny even if I tried.  My body was racked with sobs of gratefulness that He was letting me know that he IS there for me and for my family; that He is real and that He can hear my pleas of help.  How incredibly grateful I am that I KNOW that He lives and that he loves all of us with a love stronger than any love we can ever imagine.

  1. 1. Heavenly Father, are you really there?
    And do you hear and answer ev'ry child's prayer?
    Some say that heaven is far away,
    But I feel it close around me as I pray.
    Heavenly Father, I remember now
    Something that Jesus told disciples long ago:
    "Suffer the children to come to me."
    Father, in prayer I'm coming now to thee.
  2. 2. Pray, he is there;
    Speak, he is list'ning.
    You are his child;
    His love now surrounds you.
    He hears your prayer;
    He loves the children.
    Of such is the kingdom, the kingdom of heav'n.

More Ups and Downs

These past few weeks have gone by very slowly, it seems like time is crawling by, a blessing and a curse I think......

I haven't had the heart to update so I decided to wait until after we went on our "mini" vacation this past weekend so I would have something positive to write about.

There is a foundation called "Jack and Jill Late Stage Foundation" http://www.facebook.com/JAJForg, that sends families of terminally ill patients on a family vacation.  They sent us on a memory trip to the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Scottsdale.  Matt really couldn't do much more travel than that so we decided staying in AZ would be the best.

The resort was fantastic and they treated us so well.  They had this sign up in the lobby when we arrived and then they set it up each day whenever they had an activity planned for our family.

They stocked our room with TONS of snack foods and drinks and then they provided every meal for us as well.  They had really great activities for our family such as a family barbecue, a day at Dave and Busters, pedicures for the girls, movie tickets, tie dying t-shirts, making survival bracelets, and s'more making with our own personal live entertainment.  The pools were beautiful and it was so nice to relax away from our reality for a while.

Logan and I read the book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and the boy who lost his father in the 911 attacks referred to his pain each day by the heaviness of his boots.  I like this analogy and feel it accurately describes how you feel when going through trials.  We have been wearing some really heavy boots these past few weeks but during this trip the boots were much much lighter.  :)

Since Matt has had the pain pump placed he is not having any issues with pain which is a true blessing.  He is though losing lots of weight and muscle mass.  Watching him grow weaker and sleeping the day away has been a difficult thing to see.  We understand it is all part of the process but that doesn't make it any easier.  Matt doesn't really talk much anymore and I read that when people are preparing themselves to die they withdraw within themselves to be able to process it all.  This makes us sad but again we are trying to understand that this is all normal.

We continue to be amazed at how wonderful people can be as we are surrounded each day by so many who show us kindness and support.  We have been getting meals almost every night and I receive texts, emails, and messages of love daily.  Please know that I am reading them and even though I might not respond, they mean the world to me. We are able to feel strength through all of you.  Thank you to those who reach out to our children.  They are struggling and your love helps them so much.

Give your loved ones big hugs and tell them how much you love them.  Don't take things for granted.  Go on that vacation that you keep putting off.  Live life and love life!!
